Boundary, Sixer. Your Personal Brand has Hit a Century

Image
Personal Branding is like Cricket Let us understand personal branding through the eyes of cricket and its terminology. You are the batsman (for your Personal Brand) and the audience which cheers you is like Twitter followers and Facebook Fans ( Tweet This ). (Batting without an audience is as worthless as Twitter profile without followers). Competitors (whether colleagues or competitive businesses) are the opposition team trying to clean bold you all the time, sometimes with a spin (office politics) and sometimes with malpractices (like bodyline). Fielders are like the jealous colleagues waiting for a slip from your side and the runner is like your reputation or shadow. You can hit boundaries and sixers (when your content is retweeted on Twitter or shared on Facebook) but sometimes you have to be satisfied with singles (only the likes). But each run you make is adding to you and your team’s (organisation) score or your personal brand. You are in limelight and you ne...

Larger the Stature, Briefer the Profile

Image
Should the profile become shorter as one becomes more successful? As a person becomes more prominent and well known in their industry or sector, less is more. In fact, the more prominent one becomes the lower the need for a resume or profile. It's like saying: "And here is someone who needs no introduction ..., President Obama".   I have a had a few clients who broke the ground in their industries and whose achievements and contributions were so well known, that anything more than a summary of their career seemed superfluous. However, on further thought, what would interest readers was how they overcame the challenges along the way to achieving prominence. For example, if someone is well known for having turned around the performance of an ailing business how the heck did they convince smart investors to put their money into the business.   Or if someone was known for his role in campaigning for Indigenous land rights and for his role in a landmark dec...

From Media Management to Personal Branding-My journey

Image
(Interview on Diginews regional TV channel at their Indore studio. The interview focused on my journey from media management to personal branding and also my views on media in India) Excerpts from the interview Q-How did news become infotainment? Ans-In 1991 when the era of LPG (Liberalisation, Privatization and Globalization) began, it impacted every sphere of our life and business. Even TV news was impacted. Many years ago when I used to watch news on Doordarshan (public broadcaster), there used to be no ad breaks, no ‘headlines sponsored by’ and such commercialization. News used to be a holy cow, something which should not be commercialized.  Slowly as private sector entered, the format of news began to change. Private sector runs anything like a business and has financial pressures also. Government can subsidize things but private sector has to ensure financial viability. Private sector slowly started commercializing and looked at things from TRP and adv...

Best Tools for Personal Branding for Beginners by Mr Todd Hagopian

Image
The best tools to use in personal branding are the ones which will show up the easiest in online searches. For the lay person, who is not already famous, these sites include: YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Amazon (make a profile), Quora, your own personal blog (include your name in the title, or on several search areas of the blog). The important part about using these tools for personal branding is to realize exactly what people are seeing when they search for you. You should routinely use Google, Yahoo, and other search engines to see what is coming up when people search for your name. Controlling a brand is just as important as building one. If an item shows up that you don't want people to see on the first page of a Google search, then immediately start profiles on each of these tools so you fill that first page up with items that you do want them to see. On that same vein, if one of these tools pops up that you no longer use (a dead twitter account), then you might w...
