Personal Growth, Wisdom & Social Media Success - Hug & Nudge

(Vol VIII)

Sometimes a warm hug is the answer to our question

and sometimes a gentle nudge is the answer.

'Hug and Nudge' is a fortnightly column with two different perspectives from two different continents and cultures on the same question in personal development area viz.

Jennifer Sertl (based in New York, USA) and
Dr Amit Nagpal (based in New Delhi, India).

Question What is the relationship between personal growth (esp wisdom) and social media success?

A Great Question by Dr Sonica Krishan, Internationally renowned Ayurveda expert, India

Jennifer Sertl's Answer

I have a good friend named Peter Vander Auwera who wrote a very provocative post: The Programmable Me ~ We AreAll Nodes In the Grid

I agree with his perspective regarding that whether we like it or not, stories are being told about us based on analytical data. We can let that happen or we can claim some control of what our data points say about who we are and what we care about. Here are some key questions:

Are you aware that every “like” or RT or endorsement both subtle and explicit are telling a story about who you are and what you value?

Are you proud of what that aggregate story says about you, what you value and your capability?

Does the story create opportunities for you or limit possibility?

In a very real way - there is a behavioral interview going on all the time. Every word choice that you use becomes part of an algorithm that becomes part of your history, your imprint, and your credibility.

We now have @klout and @kred (among others) that are platforms that measure your impact. While these are still in development and are incomplete in what they measure - a conversation has begun about how a person’s on-line presence can be measured. I am terrified of this trajectory - however believe the inertia of it is so strong that it is vital to not ignore. And if I have any influence at all, I want to support conversations that foster your ability to honor your life and capability by encouraging you to engage directly and clearly in this complex landscape.

It is vital that whether you own your own business or are employed that you own your voice and consider what you stand for.

Here are some key questions:
  1. What is your definition of leadership? (let me be clear - regardless of your title - you are a leader of your own life. You need an operating statement - your True North)
  2. What are three qualities do you most value in others?
  3. What compliment have you received that made you feel the most seen? valued?
  4. What are five attributes of collaboration that you most value?
  5. Who are your Elite 18?
Like this beautiful image what ripples do you hope your life creates? Imagine that the words you choose are like drops in the water and set things in motion - after all, they do.

Please ask these questions frequently and keep your answers present as a guide to help you ensure that you are designing your life in ways that will continue to keep doors opening for you as the landscape of work, life, legacy get blurred.

Here are a few additional posts for those who want to take a deeper dive in the suggestions I have offered:

Wisdom First, Social Media and Branding Later
11 Reminders we need again and again

Social Media is a glasshouse and our negative attitudes & biases (and stupidities too) are visible to our network sooner or later. Wisdom, passion, storytelling, isn’t internet pointing us back to the basics? Wisdom sounds like a heavy word, more so in a world where we see foolishness all around. But then as Abba Eban says, "History teaches us that people and nations behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives." So (on a humorous note) let us seek wisdom before exhausting all other alternatives and before making a fool of ourselves. So here are the 11 reminders we need again and again.

1 Manage Your Energy-Become a positive hurricane and a bundle of positive energy. (When the energy is exhausted go home and put the mobile on silent mode). I jokingly posted recently, “Sometimes you become so sensitive to energy, that when a positive person walks in, you feel you are blowing in the wind.”

2 Forget about viral content-My workshop participants frequently ask me, “How do I make my content go viral?” My answer, "Forget about making your content viral and focus on adding value to peoples' lives and Universe will bless you with what you deserve. Bhagwad Geeta says, "Do the work and forget about the fruit" Even if you look at it scientifically, "When we worry about the fruit, we shift our energy from the goal to the fruit, and end up failing."

3 Reputation vs Efficacy-My friend Goodnews Cadogan, recently posted, "For me, in the comparison between reputation & efficacy, the latter wins, hands-down, for reputation is the sub-set of efficacy." I added, “Good reputation invites good collaborators and alliances, leading to even more efficacy, thus making it a virtuous cycle. In simple words I would say, "Good intentions invite support from the Universe, Good reputation invites support from people."

4 Love and respect people-Treat everybody as somebody. Salute the greatness, which has come out, in case of some people, and is waiting to come out in case of others.  Here are 7 Personal Branding Lessons you learn by falling in love.

5 Stay in wise company-Carl Jung says it powerfully, ''The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances; if there is any reaction, both are transformed.'' Remember, positive online company is better than negative offline company.

6 Create a Catchy Story-Your brand is nothing but your story and you are its ''Omnipotent Creator''. Since human brain is wired for stories, a story is the best way to share your knowledge and experience. A story can take the form of blogs, books, painting, cartoons, music and film. The story is sometimes subtle, sometimes direct, sometimes autobiographical, sometimes about others and sometimes comes from a wild imagination.

7 Alignment and balance-If you are in the long term race, keep striving to align personal brand with company brand, digital image with real life persona, personal interests with interests of family, friends & society and last but not the least- your inner self with outer self.

8 Collaboration with your Social Network-The first step is to inspire trust and building trust takes time. As human beings we are bound to commit mistakes, but if we have inspired or created enough trust, we shall be forgiven for our mistakes (at least the small ones). We need to make an honest attempt to shift from competitive mindset to collaborative mindset though. Pay it forward is also a good step in the direction.

9 Brands cannot afford to commit too many mistakes-Social media is creating accountability and brands (be it people or organisations), in any case, have to minimize mistakes to preserve reputation. To minimize mistakes, two things are required viz. professional ethics and wisdom. Day to day wisdom, best comes from reflection and weighing the pros and cons before taking major actions.

10 Visibility, not at the cost of Credibility-There is a race for online visibility among personal and business brands. Sometimes to gain online visibility, we may be doing things which reduce our credibility. In fact, we must remember that more wisdom & maturity is expected from successful people.

11 Stay Positive to Stay Wise-There was a nice quote I read few days back, “Entire water of the sea can’t sink a ship, unless it gets inside the ship. Similarly negativity of the world can’t put you down unless you allow it to get inside you. “ Stay positive and with a clearer mind, you are likely to stay wise.

''Enlarge as a human being, Excel as a social media being & Evolve as a personal brand.'' I had just begun when there was a wise question from a participant, ''What weightage would you give to each aspect?'' My answer, “I would advise 60:20:20. Enlarging and growing as human being is most critical, for your absolute happiness, as well as success via glasshouse styled social media.''

In fact personal development plus personal branding is a powerful mix, which develops your inner confidence first. The inner confidence becomes outer confidence and slowly overpowers your fears and insecurities. As rightly pointed out in a recent blog, personal branding is not personal bragging. True greatness rather exists in seeing greatness everywhere, and yet being humble about self.
